What's the difference between HDV, HD DVD and AVCHD?
Input or capture/edit:
HDV is a video format which records compressed (MPEG-2) video on some HD camcorders at either 720p or 1080i resolutions. HDV videos can then be output in the form of an MPEG-2 video file or an HD DVD disc with Pinnacle Studio Plus.
AVCHD is a new format of high definition video which, by using highly efficient compression (H.264), allows an HD camcorder to make long-time recordings of 1080i high definition video. There are AVCHD camcorder models which use a SD card, hard drive or optical disc.
Output or authoring/physical discs:
HD DVD is a high definition format logic and optical disc, hence an HD player format. When burning a disc in the HD DVD format, the output can be in MPEG-2. HD DVD format discs can be burned on HD DVD media or - with Pinnacle Studio Plus - on standard DVD media, which burns roughly 25 minutes of HD video on a single-layer, or 50 minutes on a dual-layer disc.
